Product Description

Product Description

This is a review of the Czech Republic's avifauna, with information on the 394 species recorded since 1800 which includes an overview of the ecology and geography of the country, bird habitats, climate, bird protection and bird areas. Thorough species accounts follow, providing information on each bird's general biology, status and distribution, breeding and winter densities, timing of occurrence and population trends. Each account is accompanied by a distribution map. The book also contains a section on the best birdwatching sites, with access maps and species. To complete the coverage there are checklists for the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

5.0 out of 5 stars You need this book for your trip!!!, 24 Jul 2002
By Janet (Ireland) - See all my reviews
We are back from a birding trip to the Czech Republic. Josef Kren's book is fabulous!! His book was incredibly useful in many ways; finding birding sites, driving directory and information on all species. It contains huge amount of data. Highly recommended!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recomended, 1 Feb 2002
By A Customer
This is the first book in English language on birds of my country. It covers in a great detail distribution across the country (maps show distribution in each of the 76 counties), vertical distribution in the mountains, breeding and winter densities, timing of migration and breeding and many aspects of breeding biology. Detailed maps of distribution are up to date, including breeding season 1999. In the section on accidentals, the author covers in a great detail occurrence of all species recorded less than 15 times since 1800. Every visitor to the Czech republic will like the part on bird watching; detailed description of access to each area, common and rare species and general characteristics of each area are described here with pretty detailed maps. The book is packed with data, although some of them should be better organized. I recommend the book to every professional ornithologist interested in densities and distribution of birds of the Czech Republic.
Get a copy for your trip to the Czech Republic; you will certainly not be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Book for every birdwatcher going to the Czech Republic, 27 Oct 2001
By A Customer
I purchased this book during my recent trip to England...I was curious about the maps of distribution, since the author decided to show distribution of all species in each of the districts of the Czech Republic. There are a few maps (a few rarer ducks species and birds of prey; total less than 10) which may not show the most recent distribution. It is due to the fact that distribution of these species is changing. Otherwise, the distribution maps are accurate and up to date (even including breeding season 1999, the book was published in 2000). Maps of the best bird watching areas are very accurate and will help everyone to find the places. I believe that this is an indispensable book for everyone traveling to my country. It is also a significant contribution to the titles on avifaunas of Europe published in English language.
Petr, professional ornithologist, Czech Ornithological Society
