A comprehensive medical reference tool, 15 Sep 2000
By A Customer
The Black's Medical Dictionary is often considered to be an authoritative reference guide for the medical profession and it certainly lives up to this reputation. Definitions, provided as encyclopaedic entries, are clear and easy to interpret and avoid unnecessary cross-referencing. Diagrams and drawings included are clear and well labelled and supplement areas of the text where needed. The appendices provide useful, although brief, introductions to a selection of areas affecting healthcare, such as travel medicine, self-help groups and common medical tests and procedures.Despite these qualities however, and due to the nature of the entries, there are perhaps not as many definitions as found in other similar works. Nor is it as portable. This book may not therefore be as suitable for some health care professionals as other medical dictionaries. Nevertheless, as a reference for the majority this book is unsurpassed. The reputation earned by previous editions of this work is most justifiable. It has a valuable place on the desk of doctors, pharmacists, nurses and other healthcare professionals as well as providing a useful reference for those with an interest in medicine and health. It should surely be a welcome addition to any library, at home or in the workplace.
