5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent field guide to an interesting area, 4 Nov 2001
By A Customer
A visit to the Seychelles is likely to be rewarding for the enthusiastic bird watcher in search of the unusual.
Guides to the area do not treat Seychelles as separate from other Indian Ocean territories, making the identification from the page of the species likely to be seen in Seychelles a problem of interpreting often imprecise and indistinct mapping.
Mr Skerrett's work may be accused of erring to the opposite in that every bird said to have been recorded in the Islands is faithfully recorded and illustrated, to the point where some pages consist wholly of species which are very unlikely to be seen.
However, the helpful page headings not only indicate succinctly the status of species but also the distribution within the Islands themselves.
The core of the work follows the tried and tested formula of Helm's other guides (vide. The Birds of Kenya and Northern Tanzania (Zimmerman et al)) in providing an excellent illustrated section followed by a detailed (and exceptionally useful)text section which describes exact locations, numbers, status and much more.
This is an excellent work that has not (Nov 2001) yet found its way in numbers into the hands of either the wardens of nor visitors to the birding spots of Seychelles. It should. I used it over 2 weeks' spotting. Highly recommended. Make sure you visit Bird Island and Aride.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and complete coverage of birds of Seychelles, 18 Jan 2009
By Colibri (Scotland) - See all my reviews
Having worked for 20 years in the Seychelles in the field of conservation I can attest to the comprehensive and complete coverage of birds found in the islands. It is well to remember that Seychelles covers an enormous EEZ from the main island of Mahe to Aldabra 1000 miles to the south west. The book depicts birds found in the granitic and the coraline islands as well as the true oceanic birds and those that from time to time find their way to the 115 scattered islands over the Indian Ocean. If there is one book to take with you when you visit this is it. Superb.
