4.0 out of 5 stars Valuable information but badly updated., 2 Aug 2001
By Andrew Shand (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This is an excellent source of information for the aspiring dinghy cruiser. Margaret Dye hsa been there and done it all. Information and advice is well presented with sufficient annecdotes to make her book a joy to read.

It comes as a shock then to find that the updating form 1992 to 2001 has been done with sticky tape. There is no mention of GPS in the index and only one short mention in the text. The information on clothing is out of date and often contradictory. Similarly for cookers and most worrying for buoyage systems.

In short buy it but think of it as written in 1992.

4.0 out of 5 stars a comprehensive guise to coastal cruising in an open boat, 10 Dec 1998
By A Customer
Margaret Dye reprises the classic work written by both she and her husband some twenty years ago. The topic is well covered with considerable common sense. Frank and Margaret Dye undertook some fairly hair-raising trips across the North Sea in a Wayfarer dinghy and much of this book is drawn from the record of these trips

The one drawback is it is a little twee, asking the reader to believe that she has written the text whilst tucked up in her sleeping bag whilst afloat on the Norfolk Broads!

That aside, as a place to start it easily compares with John Leathers'Open Boat Cruising and Ian Nicholsons Roving in Open Boats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough and practical inspiration to go small dinghy cruising, 16 April 2009
By G. White - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
A straight forward and practical book that covers all aspects of Dinghy cruising written by an author with plenty of real hands-on experience. It both acts as a handbook one can use in planning so no aspect is over-looked, but also serves to inspire one to realise how realistic and enjoyable a proposition dinghy cruising can be assuming one puts in the preparation and applies common sense.

One can imagine Margaret Dye as being the no-nonsense stalwart of the local Dinghy club willing to help out all who are earnest about taking the past-time of sailing seriously, and having little truck with those who cut corners and show no respect for the either the sea or their equipment.

Fine stuff. If you want to sail a small boat beyond the confines of the local reservoir buy it.
