Product Description

Product Description

Ever wonder why some partners seem to be able to read each other's minds? Why they are so successful at anticipating the other's intentions, avoiding all pitfalls and traps, and seem to win every time? The answer is that they are not usually guessing - by learning defensive signals it is possible for even novice players to drastically improve their game. Defence is the most difficult part of bridge, but it can be made easier by using signals to help Partner along the way to success. The book will enable readers to use, recognise and understand all the standard defensive signals used in bridge and to gain an awareness of alternative methods.

About the Author

Julian Pottage has a regular themed column in the two principal UK bridge magazines, and has written or co-written seventeen books, including Win the Big Match (ISBN 0 7134 8922 7) published by Batsford. He has also contributed to the popular Daily Bridge Calendar and was an Assistant Editor to the latest edition of The Official Encyclopedia of Bridge. His book Play or Defend has just won the (first) international Master Point Press IBPA Book of the Year Award. Julian lives in Tadley, Hampshire.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is very good, but very complicated, 26 Nov 2007
Most club players who use defensive signals will probably have 2 or 3 in their repetoir, which they will regularly use.
This book covers plenty more than that. However, it is very technical, and taking me an age to read and understand.
Unless you really want something technically very advanced (and remember your partner has to understand all your signals too!) I suggest reading the signals section of Mendelson's "Play your Cards Right" for starters. After you've mastered those with a regular partner, then you can contemplate reading this book (but as I said earlier, it's no use knowing lots of signals your partner doesn't understand, so make sure your partner reads it too, and you discuss in depth!)
