Product Description

Product Description

Who are the Celts? Where did they come from? Did the tribes of Iron Age Scotland really belong to a 'European Community' of Celts? What did it mean to be Celtic? In this fascinating book, the results of modern archaeology are used, alongside earlier finds and the historical sources, to illuminate this important but surprisingly neglected period of Scottish history. In this new edition of a classic work, Ian Armit explores the prehistoric world of the Celts, from around 1000 BC to AD 500. Fully illustrated with colour photographs, maps and diagrams, the book covers ethnicity and identity, daily life, Celtic art, the Druids, brochs, hillforts and Celtic warfare and the clash with Rome.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful book on Celtic Scotland, 13 Nov 2002

(TOP 50 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Ian Armit, writer of Beyond the Brochs: Changing Perspectives on the Later Iron Age in Atlantic Scotland,Scotland's Hidden History, The archaeology of Skye and the Western Isles and Towers in the North: The Brochs of Scotland, brings his vast knowledge to present this book anyone interested in Highland history can enjoy. Loads with colour pictures, B & W and ariel photos, he covers the brochs and vitrified stone fortresses that cover a lot of Scotland. He has detailed drawings of wheelhouses, insides of a broch and weems, showing how these operated as a part of Celtic daily life.

A wonderful book recommended to those wishing a bit more on Scotland.
