5.0 out of 5 stars Very good practice for beginners/intermediates, 31 July 2001
By A Customer
I am a very average player with a poor attention span, and find it very difficult to plough my way through weighty instructional tomes. I have found that the best way I learn is by practice and repetition. This book gives you 80 positions and asks you to evaluate each one, giving you 5 possible answeres (a) to (e). Unlike most of the other books on positions I have read such as "1001 winning chess sacrifices and combinations" by Fred Reinfeld, in many of the positions it is not clear who is winning or whether there is a winning possibility. This book has forced me to think harder about the positions than most other chess books that I have read, and I have felt that I have learnt more. There are very good notes on each problem at the back of the book, which have taught me a good deal particularly about endgame strategies.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys chess puzzles, and beginners in particular.

3.0 out of 5 stars A little too high-brow for me !, 25 Nov 2008
By gjb (England) - See all my reviews
As an amateur / intermediate player rated approx. 100 BCF, I bought this book to improve my combinative technique. To be honest I struggled. The problems were a little too difficult for me. This book should be aimed more for intermediate / master level players (certainly those players rated above 150 BCF). I think that without the chess board and pieces at hand, it was very difficult to follow the analysis in this book on the train when consulting the solutions! Although I got a number of the questions correct, most of the endgame puzzles were far too challenging for me ....
