Product Description

Product Description

A Bronze Age wreck off Dover, the "Mary Rose", the "Cutty Sark", the rescuing of a 19th-century transatlantic steamship, and a section of the Mulberry Harbour sunk on the eve of the Normandy Landings, are among the tales in this exploration of the history of shipwrecks on Britain's sea-beds. Documentary and pictorial evidence are presented alongside accounts of the rich archaeological findings, and the book is written in a style designed to appeal to the general as well as the professional reader.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to maritime archaeology, 20 Jan 2003
This book is an excellent introduction to marine archaeology. It makes a subject that is only recently being explored deeper (pardon the pun!. Broken down through the ages from Ferriby and Dover bronze age boats,to modern steel vessels, it puts them all in historical context.

Although an excellent guide, it should be used with Basil Greenhill's Archaeology of the Boat (out of print, sadly)for a more detailed picture of ship and boat construction.
