Photographs from The National Portrait Gallery's archives have been combined with sitters' reminiscences and other contemporary source material to give a detailed account of late Victorian upper and middle class clothing. Twenty years of Victorian fashion are covered in this book and extended captions describe details of the costumes and their accessories, how it felt to wear such clothes, how the clothes were cleaned and cared for and how popular fashion changed during this period. Contemporary quotations and ancedotes are taken from diaries, fashion magazines, newspapers and other Victorian memorabilia. The photographs used throughout this book include images of Henry Irving, Queen Victoria, Camille Saint-Saens and Lillie Langtry.
