Product Description

Product Description
During the last two years, we've been invaded by a new family of acronyms and a flurry of terms related to wireless technology. These include UMTS, GPRIS, WAP, SMS, 3G as well as Bluetooth, iMode, DoCoMo and Blackberry. Heavily hyped by the industry, the phenomenon has happened fast. After the 3G auctions where telecom operators committed billions of euros to buy the rights to airwave space from governments, it has happened even faster. Roam cuts through the hype to set out the challenges and opportunities ahead. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From the Publisher
Revenues for wireless commerce (i.e. mobile phones, Palm Pilots etc)could hit $83 billion by 2003 and $140 billion by 2004. 'Roam' cuts through the hype to analyse the opportunities, and dangers, ahead for business. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A reference book on wireless technology, 26 Nov 2001
Rare insight into the world of the Wireless Internet, «Roam» is a business book covering the background and evolution of wireless technology and portable devices. Spellbinding, it reads at times like a novel, for instance when describing new techology tested at the World Economic Forum in Davos or the lunacy behind the billions of euros paid out by companies to buy the rights to airwave space, describing Japan's successful i-mode services or taking the reader through many of the entertaining and imaginative applications of SMS. Definitely a reference book for anyone seeking to understand the wireless future.

Easy-to-read, thoughtful, thorough, timely and doesn't fall into the trap of spurious speculation like a lot of "technology explained" tomes do.

If only the book were attached to a wireless network to update itself as the 3G landscape evolves...

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, 16 Nov 2001

Finally a book that explains in plain words what UMTS is and why telcos paid those crazy amounts of money for 3G licenses, and which also explains services and applications without marketing lingo. I'm tired of books that talk about the coming "revolution" and how "everything will change". This one is refreshingly honest.
