Shocking, gripping, and completely outrageous!, 5 Feb 2003
As someone who is only really just getting back into reading as a hobby - and usually being a slow reader, I thought I'd never get through such a long book. It started off a bit slowly and I wasn't sure that I would get into it, however, the author was setting out a lot of background and making me curious - so i couldn't put it down! The book begins by introducing lots of characters from various generations of a family throughout the 20th century so you have to keep track of lots of threads and details so you can follow the plot. I did find myself flicking back as my memory isn't that good - it's great though that the book made me that interested that I wanted to know everything in depth! The story mainly follows the stories of the women in a 'family' held together by blu-tac and hope. Sidonia has a collection of children with different fathers and we follow the colourful sex lives of the group and the men with whom they come into contact. The sex sessions are constant and the partners swap with ridiculous frequency. I found the sex scenes to be well written and the sheer outrageousness of the circumstances of each encounter brought out that voyeuristic instinct that we all try to deny we have!! There is constant reference to the mysterious Lily Josephine but you have to wait a long time to find out what her importance is to all the characters and the plot. We get to know her when Sidonia and the gang all go to stay with Lily Josephine and her similarly disjointed family. The family get together is not harmonious, we discover more bizarre family secrets and experience the author's skills at keeping you gripped with thrilling action. The result of this reunion is that Lily leaves the family home and sets off on an adventure. She conveniently lands herself a job as a housekeeper with several sex starved men who don't seem to care that they may have to share the only women to have arrived in their village for the last ten years! Yes it's far fetched, over the top and frankly over populated with characters so you only get to know a few in depth. I still have a real attachment to the novel. I was hooked completely and was longing to reach the final pages and get to the bottom of the plot's mysteries. It was recommended by a friend from whom I borrowed it and I ended up buying it from Amazon so i could keep it. I am currently reading another by the same author - Wild Young Bohemians as I really missed reading Kate's pacy, sexy stories about her insane characters' lives!
