The book works through an eight-week programme concentrating on helping you to stop battling with unsuccessful diets and focusing on making life changes for a slimmer, fitter and healthier you.

Lighten Up is presented in two main sections. The first part of the book sets out to help you understand your relationship with food and how to view yourself. The author Pete Cohen is a life coach you may recognise from appearances on GMTV and the BBC2 series Confidence Lab. He applies motivational techniques he uses to train athletes to the Lighten Up programme and actually makes the whole thing fun. The second part of the book focuses on habits and how to change. It gives food, nutrition and exercise advice. There are no strict rules, no weighing, no measuring, no gimmicks and no calorie counting--just pure choices for you to make.

You may well be tempted to skip to the second part of the book where the eight-week programme actually starts. However, should you do that you will miss out on the very important preparation section, that will not only help you, but will teach you how to feel better about yourself.

The programme is approached as "slimming from the head down". Throughout the book you will find challenges and questionnaires that help you to gradually introduce changes that will stay with you for life. I, like many others quit smoking with the Allen Carr book so I knew that psychology worked for me. I have been overweight my adult life. I bought this book read half of it in 2 hours and in 7 weeks I have lost 17 pounds. I am not dieting and I eat what I want when I want. It is astonishing and I am almost evangelical about it. Do not buy this book if you are looking for a quick fix diet to get into that bikini, at least not this year but by next year you will be. It is the most positive way to look at food. Enjoy,

If you've done the rounds of all the slimming classes and tried everything from the cabbage soup to the bannana diet, then this is the key to the door that you have been seeking for years. For once this is not hype, it is not a fad and it is not something that will bring about only short term results. This book provides common sense, sensible solutions to people who, like me, have struggled to become slimmer, healthier and fitter. If you need motivation and a solution then look no further.

I have read every diet/ health and fitness book that money can buy!! Let's say i was looking for a book that would make me slim, fit & healthy by just buying it!!! I have found that very book. All my adult life I have suffered from an eating problem, ie: I eat far too much when I don't need to. This book has shown me how to control this , by talking to my body via the mind, and gain some control over the way I behave and think about food. Pete cohen has literally lightened my body up! After the birth of my 2nd child I gain a massive 3 stone, thanks to the LIGHTEN UP BOOK I now have my weight under control and a sensible approach to food. I no longer think what will I have for Breakfast, And then immediatly think what can I have for lunch, dinner etc. Thank you. A must for any failed dieter!!!
