Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

We have all been called for an interview at some point in our lives. We have all come away either elated or disappointed at our performance, and afterwards we have all been dumbfounded when that polite rejection letter drops through the letterbox. What did I do wrong? is that familiar question that haunts us at the dead of night.

Having told us How to Write a Winning CV in his previous book, and thus helped us get our foot in the door, Alan Jones now tells us in Winning at Interview that the first thing we require is a change of attitude. He argues that if we treated job hunting like a game, we would notice that the eventual winner is not necessarily the best person for the job. "Indeed," Jones says, "the best person for the job is often eliminated in the first half ... [T]he winner of the game will always be the player who has played the game the best." Knowing how to play the game is the secret of success."

In 13 short chapters, Jones takes us through the interview process, from preparation to post-interview. Jones illustrates, among other things, how an ill-thought-out reply to a seemingly innocuous question like "How was your journey?" can destroy your chances of getting that much sought-after job.

Winning at Interview is a concise, easy-to-read, well-structured book, which shows us that, at the end of the day, all we need is the ability to persuade others to buy what we have to sell. This book and its predecessor succeed in showing us how. --Aruna Vasudevan

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastically useful recruitment tool., 2 April 2001
By A Customer
Normally I don't believe in books to help me get a job. However, "Winning at Interview" is the antithesis of these naive thoughts. Full of insight into the complex world of recruitment, and the potentially daunting interview process, this book really helped me see the interview world in a completely different manner. Top marks. And thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most useful book I've ever purchased, 16 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This book really delivers! It is full of practical advice on which questions to ask as an interviewer and guideline answers for the interviewee which make the whole process of interviewing less fraut. Importantly aswell it tells both parties how to interpret the questions and answers and highlights roads that should not be travelled!!
Never again will I struggle with answers to the dreaded - "tell me about yourself" or "where do you see yourself in 5 years time" or even more daunting "why did you leave your previuous position?"
Fantastic value for an already well thumbed book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The perfect primer, 7 Jan 2005
By Tom P (London) - See all my reviews
I've had a copy of this book for a few years now, and I've gone for 4 interviews while I've had it and got 3 of the jobs (the one I didn't get went to someone vastly more experienced).

It's the perfect size - long enough to be useful, not so long that you forget bits. The tips are invaluable and the sample interview questions and answer style suggestions really help build your confidence that you'll be able to handle anything when you get in there.

If you're in the least bit nervous before an interview, get this book. It'll give you all the confidence you need, and you won't find yourself boring them with irrelevant nonsense.

If you want the job, buy this book.
