5.0 out of 5 stars An absolute must for an insight into espionage!, 9 Feb 2001
By Mr A Rhodes (Pencoed, Bridgend United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This autobiography of Markus Wolf is amongst the most exciting, gripping and witty texts available on the Cold War and the espionage trade. Wolf makes no apologies for his own political leanings and throughout this highly insitive book creates an atmosphere where the reader is prone to come away with a much greater understanding and appreciation for the internal and external difficulties of East Germany from its conception to collapse. Wolf does not, in any way, seek to hide from his responsibility as head of the East German Foreign Intelligence Service, popularly known as the Stasi, and offers an account which is compelling and highly enjoyable. Wolf does not meet with any preconceptions of Eastern figures that may be held in the West, and presents himself as a witty, understanding and open-minded figure. This autobiography is anything but boring and after reading it I came away with a much improved understanding of Eastern ideas during the Cold War, and the appreciation that although the West may be deemed "victorious", the West was not necessarily morally "just" and that many of the Eastern fears were much the same as those held in the West. This book really is a must-read for anyone with even a passing interest in espionage.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great (and controversial) book, 25 Jul 2004
The book is well written, interesting and full of information. As for all the books of this kind, one cannot ever be sure wether the contents are really "genuine" or part of a big disinformation plot... well, maybe I've read too much Robert Ludlum works:)
