5.0 out of 5 stars A fabulous compilation of Gemmell's early Drenai works., 18 Mar 2002
By phil@drenai.com (Bristol, UK) - See all my reviews
This novel is a collection of the first three chronological novels in Gemmell's Drenai world. The first tale is that of Legend, arguably the best book that Gemmell has ever written. It tells the story of the Drenai's struggle against an invading force, the Nadir. It tells of Heroes and honour, with stunning battle scenes and brilliant character development, it is a book that will leave you hungry for more.

The second tale in this book is that of The King Beyond the Gate. It is set 100 years after the events in Legend and has a far more dark feel to it. With really good story construction and yet more good characters, this tale is a brilliant sequel to Legend.

The final tale, Waylander, is probably my favourite from Gemmell. It is a wonderful story of self discovery. We follow the main character, Waylander the Slayer, through a war torn Drenai nation on his quest for self redemption. Heroes are found and heroes are lost, a really excellent tale.

All in all, this book is a really good introduction to the works of David Gemmell. It contains probably his three best works and will leave you looking frantically for Volume 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classic fantasy, 11 Mar 2007
By Mr. G. Battle (Essex, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Drenai Tales takes three of the original Drenai stories and places them in to chronological order. David Gemmell's work is full of dark characters seeking to fulfill their destinies in a fantasy world of sieges, assassination, love, honour and betrayal. Each story packs a hefty punch in a different way. Legend produces the best siege tale ever crafted, Waylander offers a gripping insight in to a man controlled by forces beyond his understanding and The King Beyond the Gate is an ultimate reminder that power corrupts, spinning existing fantasy threads in to a new and riveting course. Gemmell wrote fantasy fiction of the higest quality and I urge anyone not familiar with his work to track down this volume and get started - it's outstanding.
