Product Description

Product Description

Known for her roles in the "Carry On" films, Barbara Windsor reveals the secrets of her life: her friendship with Kenneth Williams, her affair with Sid James, her involvement with Ronnie Kray, and her marriage to Ronnie Knight. She recalls her East End childhood and her days in the "Carry On" team and the other highlights of her acting career; parts in Ken Russel's "The Boyfriend" and Joan Littlewood's "Oh What a Lovely War". Renowned for her saucy laugh and distinctive anatomy, Barbara Windsor emerges, despite experiencing much sadness in her life, as a resourceful and determinedly cheerful woman.

5.0 out of 5 stars Barbara: The Autobiography of a Cockney Sparrow, 19 April 2008
By Jake M "terbo08" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
Barbara Windsor's first autobiography written in 1990 is a real gem for both her fans and those people who are just looking for a good read.
I agree, "All Of Me" is her best memoir as it goes into greater detail into her life and is more recent so it includes information on her relationship with her thrid husband Scott of whom she married in 2000 and her life as Peggy Mitchell in the top BBC soap EastEnders.
But, Barbara: The Autobiography of a Cockney Sparrow is a wonderful, compulsive read. Here, the lovely Babs reveals the secrets of her life and loves, her friendship with Kenny Williams, her scandal of an affair with Sid James, her relationship with the Kray twins, her marriages to gangster Ronnie Knight and Stephen Hollings, her childhood and early years in the business as well as tons of gossip about her days as the Carry On girl. This is one outrageous story, jaw dropping stuff and at times, hilarious, there were points when Windsor had me in fits of laughter.
But you have to feel sorry for her to as she has had a lot of heartache and tragity in her life as well as the amazing and varied acting career of which is so superbly detailed in this book.
If you can find a copy of this juicy autobiography, I fully recommened that you give it a go.

4.0 out of 5 stars All of Me is Better is the Sequel to this book!, 6 April 2006
I'll never understand why darling Babs never had any children of her own. The book is a prequel to her 2000 autobiography "All of Me" which is really worth reading. To those of us who don't live in England, we may know her from her role as Peggy Mitchell on East Enders. In my opinion, Babs never had the ideal childhood and life. She went into relationships with straight men that just appeared doomed from the beginning. It's seems a sad life for one of the best known British celebrities. She is always smiling despite her own personal pain. She divorced her second husband after this book. But the book is good insight into her life, you begin to pity her rather than envy her. Her best relationships are with men who won't pay any attention to her sexually because they're gay. Although her heart's been broken, I believe Brits still love her and I still think she deserved to become Dame Barbara Windsor after all.
