Product Description

Review

A skilfully constructed history of the peak of female sexual pleasure from ancient Greece, where women purchased long leather probes called olisbos (self-satisfiers), to medieval and later times when the very idea of enjoying sex was regarded with horror - although, surprisingly enough, dildos were freely available during the Edwardian era. The secrets of the orgasm existed in other places and at other times but the modern European sexual age began when the clitoris was discovered in 1558 by anatomist Mateo Columbus, who was promptly imprisoned for his pains. Margolis tells us that over a typical lifetime we can expect to enjoy only about 10 hours of orgasm and in the animal kingdom only female apes, dolphins and elephants find sex enjoyable (although one can only speculate how research into these assertions was carried out).

Erotic Review

‘Margolis’ book is rich in delicious accounts of the orgasms of the great and good, past and present’

The first act of sexual intercourse, the earliest example of two like creatures coming into intimate contact for the purpose of combining their DNA to create a new creature, probably took place about one and a half billion years BC, at a location deep in the primordial oceans. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars Another delight from a dazzling and original mind, 20 Jun 2004
By Dr. Cordell Bonney (Cambridge, Mass., USA) - See all my reviews
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars rather than 5 is that I haven't finished it yet. But I wanted to submit an early review so as to counter the reader who criticized it so strongly for being badly written and ill-informed on matters of evolutionary theory. This is the second Margolis book I've read. The first, A Brief History of Tomorrow was the most intelligent book I've ever read on the future, and was outstandingly well written, as I said in my review when it came out in the US. I bought the latest in England as I couldn't wait till November, when it's published in the States. Two observations: the first, the author is EXTREMELY smart and well-informed regarding evolutionary matters. The second is that the writing is, if anything, even better and more compelling than in his first book. The third observation is that the British reader who complains loftily about Margolis's writing manages himself to get seven grammatical and syntactical errors that I can spot into one paragraph of criticism. Some critic! Disregard his spiteful and ignorant review. The Intimate History of the Orgasm is a fine book. I may update the rating to five after I've finished it, but I'm not rushing because it is so very enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent read, 16 Jun 2004
By A Customer
What an enjoyable book!

I really enjoyed the way that the tone of the book managed to avoid a dusty academic examination of the subject but rather gave a jaunty, funny and interesting account of the orgasm without being too sensationalist. Plenty of fascinating facts to store away for future use (Masturbation clubs in 18th century Scotland, anyone?) and a zippy style that keeps you reading. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant, 19 Jun 2004
I don't know what the reader from Derbyshire who gave this a measly one star rating can have been reading, but it can't surely have been this fabulous book. As many reviewers, both here and in the press, have rightly said, Margollis's book is brilliantly written, honest and outspoken and in parts is actually rather arousing. I also take issue with Derbyshire man over Margollis's take on the evolutionary function of orgasm. I read widely on evolution and for my money, this author's interpretation is spot-on. I suspect Derbyshire man may just be a bit less intellectually evolved than the excellent Mr Margolis!
