The picture on the web site shows the original version of the book that you think you are buying. However, this book is not appropriate for use with an instrument. For some reason this new version is not much bigger than a normal paperback, and whilst it does contain the same information, the size and style of the book precludes its proper use with a piano or even a standard music stand.

The reason this book is a bestseller must lie in the sales of the previous version. Please bear in mind if you are buying this book that it is not the standard size for music and the binding means that it will not stay open at a page for reading whilst playing. Don't buy it if you are expecting to be able to put it on a normal piano whilst open and still be able to read it!!!

Good book, but has the basic flaw that it is bound as a paper back and therefore is difficult to put on a piano music stand!

I'm finding this book quite useful, and making quick progress in playing the pieces. However, there is a caveat... I've played guitar for over 20 years and work extensively with music notation, and I've previously used a keyboard for inputting MIDI drum and bass parts, so my main hurdle is in gaining "proper" piano technique and learning to play the piano idiomatically (rather than from a guitarist's point of view).

For me, the book works because there's a minimum of lengthy explanations of basic principles for beginners. If you can't already read music and don't know which note is which, though, you'd be well advised to use the book in conjunction with another (more gradual) tutorial or even with actual piano lessons.

The point about the book's format (standard paperback, not ringbound) is worth noting; however, I've found that this encourages me to learn the pieces and play them from memory, rather than trying to sight-read them. Both approaches are worth developing, but the former is generally more useful.
