Humphries was obviously bowled over when he got to meet Tom Waits briefly in London, but clearly spent too much time fawning over his hero than conducting anything resembling a serious interview.

Nothing of what makes Waits such an astounding performer and songwriter comes accross in the book, which offers little more than a bare bones biography and a slew of recycled quotes.

A fairly well researched discogragphy is surely the only reason anyone should buy this book. Listening to the great man's albums is a far more rewarding experience than reading this drivel.

Fans of Waits are sure to be disappointed by this book which pretends to be a bio. It's actually mostly a collection of the author's own enthusiastic essays about Waits. Read a Dave Marsh bio of Springsteen to get an idea of the flavor. Direct quotes from Waits are mostly familiar, having already appeared in well known magazines. Save your money or buy a spare copy of a Waits CD instead.

A lovely introduction to the life and work of Tom Waits. Packed full of fabulous quotes and fantastic facts this book doesn't pretend to be anything other than a journey around Tom and his myriad influences. It also helps that Patrick Humphreys is an excellent writer and laugh out loud funny. Totally recommended.
