5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent walking guides, 7 Feb 2009
By John Meanwood (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews

These guides are brilliant. The walks are arranged with the shortest at the beginning of the book and the longest at the end, so if you haven't done much walking you can ease yourself in gently.

Each walk is detailed over about five pages. There is a Ordnance Survey map showing the complete walk, though they are not large and I would therefore advise you to take a 1:25000 map of the area and a compass that you know how to use. There is a general description of the walk with points corresponding to the map and advice on where to park the car or catch a bus.

I would consider the Pathfinder series to be the best available, as the descriptions of the walks compared to my experiences of these walks mean that the authors must have actually done them.

5.0 out of 5 stars walking the capital, 29 April 2009
By Paul Tapner (poole dorset england) - See all my reviews

If you're in london and you want to go walking, then this is the book to get. Twenty eight different walks around the place. some are in the centre are some are in rather remote places very far on the outskirts. the latter contain an awful lot of woodland.

the book contains details of ten walks described as short and easy. thirteen described as moderately challening. and five really long ones for those who really want a challenge.

the shortest is three miles and the longest is eight miles.

each walk takes up two to three pages, and has a map with your route highlighted in yellow, a short description of the walk and the area, a photo or two from it, and written directions for you to follow. The vast majority are very easy to follow and although the directions can seema little vague at times on others the maps are very easy to read and follow so you shouldn't have any problems.

The book also contains maps of london showing where each walk starts, a tube map an index and a section saying where to go for further information.

I've had this book for eight years and I've still not had the time to do all the walks in it. Those I have done have shown me fascinating sights in the centre I'd not noticed before, and introduced me to remarkable landscapes out in the countryside. You could be forgiven for forgetting you were in london when doing the latter.

en essential volume for the serious walker and highly recommended

The maps in this book are not adaquate. The descriptions are good though not really informative but if you plan on following these walks you will need a good map as well.
