5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent walking guides, 7 Feb 2009
By John Meanwood (Leeds, UK) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
These guides are brilliant. The walks are arranged with the shortest at the beginning of the book and the longest at the end, so if you haven't done much walking you can ease yourself in gently.

Each walk is detailed over about five pages. There is a Ordnance Survey map showing the complete walk, though they are not large and I would therefore advise you to take a 1:25000 map of the area and a compass that you know how to use. There is a general description of the walk with points corresponding to the map and advice on where to park the car or catch a bus.

I would consider the Pathfinder series to be the best available, as the descriptions of the walks compared to my experiences of these walks mean that the authors must have actually done them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent but slightly outdated, 6 Oct 2009
By haunted (IRELAND) - See all my reviews
We used this book recently and did 4 of the walks in it. It was published in 2006 and there were a few places where the routes described could be updated. However there was nothing that would cause you to lose your way.

However the walks described (more than 20) are excellently described in the book and give a flavour of the different types of terrain in the North York Moors Park, such as coast walks, moors and dales.

The walks are divided into easy, medium and difficult so you should be able to judge what walks will best suit you. Each walk has a detailed extract from Ordnance Survey maps with the route highlighted. There is also a map of the Moors showing exactly where each walk is in the Park.

1.0 out of 5 stars best avoided, 10 Aug 2009
These guides appear to be outdated and are best used as a very general guide. As pointed out by another reviewer of the highland guide on this site. For example, Hole of Horcum walk is not just misleading in that it fails to warn you that the footpath can be muddy, steep and difficult but the actual route is not possible as there are no right of way signs blocking the route. Personally I found this guide a waste of money.
