Product Description

Review

An architectural emphasis will be of particular interest to those with an ecclesiastical interest, but the book doesn't disappoint in its depiction of French and Spanish landscapes. --Westmorland Gazette

As you'd expect from a photographer of the calibre of Derry Brabbs, The Roads to Santiago, a celebration of the ancient pilgrim routes through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela, is a stunning collection of images. --The Great Outdoors

Derry Brabbs's celebration of the architecture and countryside along the route would make a great present for any past or prospective caminante. --Daily Telegraph

Product Description

Designated as World Heritage sites in 1993, the ancient pilgrimage routes to the shrine of Santiago de Compostela have seen an astonishing rise in the number of pilgrims undertaking the route for purposes of religion or tourism. There were no fewer than 180,000 bona fide pilgrims in the Holy Year of 2004. Although there are plenty of guidebooks, and personal accounts of the journey, there is no fully illustrated book covering the magnificent architectural and stunning landscape highlights to be found en route. This book will cover all the major routes, on both sides of the Pyrenees, from Le Puy, Vezelay, Tours and Arles, and will cover the various alternatives within Spain itself culminating in Santiago, and then extending onwards to the rugged coast of Finisterre ("the end of the earth"). The historical context will be explained, and all the notable monuments and landscapes to be seen will be illustrated with photographs by one of Britain's leading landscape and architectural photographers.
