Product Description
Synopsis
A translation of extracts from "The Perfection of Wisdom in 8000 Lines" illustrated with ancient manuscripts from Cambridge University Library. The text represents the first formal expression of central Buddhist ideas such as the voidness of all things and the ideal of a bodhisattva - the ideal that we can become a Buddha-to-be ourselves. It is composed of conversations among Buddhas, bodhisattvas, gods and monks as they debate the nature of existence. The extracts have been chosen to illustrate the key themes of the text, and they are accompanied by commentary and a glossary. An introduction from the Dalai Lama explains the relevance of the text to Buddhist thought and the background of the illustrations. At the back of the book there are detailed notes to every image.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book presents Buddhism to a modern readership., 4 Sep 2000
By A Customer
'The Perfection of Wisdom' is an outstanding achievement. Craig Jamieson offers the modern reader the very core of Buddhist teaching by means of carefully selected extracts from this classic Sanskrit scripture which are set against illustrations, every one of which is appropriate to the text in question. These manuscript images are about one thousand years old and are reproduced marvellously in the book. The translation is a feat : the ancient Sanskrit is rendered in modern day English and introduced by means of short commentaries, which enable the reader to connect with the extracts in an immediate way, nothing is overdone. There is an excellent glossary at the back together with a brief bibliography. The book can be read in an evening and returned to again at one's leisure. Craig Jamieson has written a book that may, possibly, become a classic. His deep scholarship is not shown off at all, but has been put to good effect in producing a spiritual gem. The Foreward by H.H. The Dalai Lama is wholly merited.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most understandable and beautiful version I've yet seen., 12 April 2000
By A Customer
This is not a review, only a comment. In my opinion we need more books like this that relate to the average reader. It seems clear to me that this book was not written for the scholar, but the beginner; easily read, understandable and beautifully illustrated. R.C. Jamieson seems to have an ability to relate to this audience.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfection of the Perfection of Wisdom?, 4 April 2000
By A Customer
This gorgeous book combines sutras extracted from "The Perfection of Wisdom in 8,000 Lines" with fantastic reproductions of illustrations taken from the oldest dated Sanskrit and Nepalese manuscripts in the world! As a collector quality art book, "Perfection of Wisdom" holds its own.

But "The Perfection of Wisdom" isn't just a picture book. Craig Jamieson's translations are highly accessible reading, and the passages are well-chosen. Readers will find the text -- the way Jamieson renders it -- at turns inspirational, entertaining, outright funny, or perhaps a bit of all of the above.

Rate this one five stars as an art history book AND five stars as a translation of scripture!
