Review

Susan Denyer shows a natural empathy for her subject and the countryside she loved (Home & Country )

A beautiful and absorbing book which will keep anyone ever touched by Beatrix Potter's life and work thoroughly absorbed from stunning cover to cover (Antiques Magazine )

Product Description

As an artist and storyteller Beatrix Potter is world-famous. Of no less importance is her work in protecting some of the finest examples of the Lake District's landscapes and in creating romantic interiors and a beautiful garden at Hill Top, the farmhouse she bought at Near Sawrey in 1905. Her picturesque house and the breathtaking scenery inspired many of Beatrix's stories and drawings. This book looks at the relationship between the Lake District and her work and includes numerous extracts from her letters and diaries, as well as atmospheric photographs from the Beatrix Potter archive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hill Top., 27 April 2008
By Anthony B. Whittle "booklover" (Southport) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Without doubt Hill Top is is a name synonymous with the famous Beatrix Potter. She bought this farmhouse in 1905, spent much of her time there and really loved the place.Strange as it may seem for a woman of her background Beatrix wanted to be a sucessfull farmer more than anything else and there in Near Sawrey she became one.To visit the house now as so many have done over the years since the National Trust took it over is to literaly step back in time and to her many fans as well as casual observers of another age it is a most rewarding experience. Unfortunately no photography of any kind is allowed in the house and this is where this wonderful book by Susan Denyer really comes into its own . The photographs of the rooms and furniture give one a chance to be able to study Hill Top at leasure something you can hardly attempt on just a visit. The colour plates of the farm and that general area of the lake district are quite stunning not to mention some old photos of Beatrix, her family and the times they lived in just for good measure.Several watercolours taken from some of the stories that were written at Hill Top are included with easily recognisable backgrounds and last but not least an excellent narrative puts the icing on the cake . This superb book is designed for your sheer enjoyment and it does not dissapoint.
