5.0 out of 5 stars A contemporary take on the traditional Cinderella story with a generous pinch of girl-power. , 1 Jun 2007

Ella likes to climb trees, ride horses bareback and skate on thin ice. She's a kind and down-to-earth girl happy to spend hours in the kitchen amongst the cinders chatting with the servants, so her sisters call her Cinderella. There's a royal ball at the palace which just isn't Ella's kind of thing so she suggests that the fairy godmother helps the servants have a really good night out instead. There's a big knees-up with a frog band, dancing and general merriment. Prince Charming would rather climb trees, ride horses bareback and skate on thin ice than dance and he gets on like a house on fire with Cinderella, and the Fairy Godmother transforms a pumpkin into hot air balloon so the couple can escape happily ever after. This is a corking story, a delicious mix of modern attitudes and traditional setting, which pleases and amuses my 6-year old daughter who like a fairytale but prefers a funky heroine. Great story with fun stylised illustrations: a winner for girls from 3-7.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fresh Reworking of a Classic Story, 16 Nov 2007

This is Cinderella for the twenty first century, and it's a delight. No downtrodden servant girl here, waiting for her handsome prince. In this story, Ella does not want to go to the ball, she wants to roller skate and run around, and not have to wear stupid dresses. Her sisters go to the ball and Ella stays at home to have fun with the servants. Her party is much more fun and the traditional story ends up colliding with and being triumphed over by the much more entertaining world of Ella and her tomboyish ways. My children were absolutely fascinated by this book. They thought they knew what to expect and it was wonderful to see their faces as their expectations were turned on their heads. Funny and charming. The illustrations are nice and dynamic with lots of energy that match the story perfectly.
