Product Description

Product Description

The mid-1960s witnessed not only the demise of the bulk of the Isle of Wight railway network but also the withdrawal of the last remaining vestiges of the Victorian steam railway. The author has drawn together a graphic pictorial record of steam on the island in the 1960s.

2.0 out of 5 stars Final Years of Isle of Wight Steam, 8 Mar 2009
By Andrew J. Britton (United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Books on the Isle of Wight railways are always welcome, especially when they are in all colour. However, what a pity that this book does not match up to the quality of 'Ryde by Steam' and 'Return to Ryde by Steam'. There are few, if any quality shots, of exterior views of stations or interior views of signalboxes and track diagrams etc. Island railway staff have failed to be identified and where an attempt was made at Smallbrook Junction on page 46 (lower picture), Signal Vic Hailes, the most photographed British Railways employee, was incorrectly captioned!

This book has 'flooded the market' for IOW enthusiasts and does not directly contribute to the "24 Calbourne Overhaul Fund" or any other Isle of Wight Steam Railway project, via book royalties.

Sadly, much of the caption information has been pinched from the 'Once Upon A line' books - including the reference to the Driver Eddie Prangnell anecdote at Wroxall on page 68 (upper picture)!

Several inclusions of pictures are not even from the final years of steam, examples being: the frontispiece of 18 Ningwood clearly pre 1960 as it shows mixed livery carriage stock and secondly page 4 a 1953 Freshwater shot!

Remainder/unwanted second hand stocks of this book (at very low prices) are scattered across railway preservation junk boxes. Search around, or better still save up and buy a quality all colour Ryde by Steam or Return to Ryde by Steam book that directly helps with royalties to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good pictorial record., 12 Jul 2009
By C. Watford "Flying Syphon" (UK) - See all my reviews

Another worthwhile record of yet another railway system that has been decimated by incessant, long term right-wing capitalist politics in the UK. With only minor errors, this book portrays an insight into aspects of the sunset era of this wonderful railway, on what was once a wonderful island.
