Product Description

Product Description

Iarnrod Eireannhad had perhaps the most difficult task of the three new companies. The railways had been losing money for decades and had lacked appropriate levels of investment for many years. The most recent locomotives were built in the late 1970s, the rest of the fleet dated from the 1950s and 60s. Passenger rolling stock consisted mainly of ex BR Mk 11s and 111s and whilst there was still quite a lot of freight traffic out of the age of steam with most of the track away from the main Dublin to Cork line consisting of unwelded rail with manual boxes and semaphore signalling. This was all a delight for visiting railway enthusiasts, but a nightmare for the operators. This pictorial album shows the remarkable changes made by the company in the last 20 years. Among topics covered will be the new rolling stock introduced, both locomotive and railcars, the major investment in infrastructure, the resignalling of a large part of the network, the investment in new stations and an indication of how much future investment is being planned.

1.0 out of 5 stars 20 Years of Progress?, 7 Dec 2007
By J. M. Allen (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I first saw this book in the Ian Allan Bookshop at Waterloo in March 2007, glanced through it - and put it back on the shelf. Unfortunately, I then "won" a copy in a competition. It is presently in a box awaiting dispatch to the local Oxfam shop.
There are some nice photographs - mostly taken by Mark Darby and Chris Milner. Sadly, those taken by the author are universally dire - dull, grainy and occasionally out-of-focus. The shot of 082 on an up "Enterprise" on page 46 being a good example - looks like 35mm 400ASA film with too slow a shutter speed to freeze the action. And how he got the composition so totally wrong with the shot of 112 on page 56 escapes my comprehension.
Amazingly, some of the best photographs are from IÉ's own collection - unusual as commercial photographers come at railways from an "arty" perspective, which generally does not give the type of detail sought by enthusiasts. I also felt the book had been "rushed out" in order to avoid including new railcars recently delivered to IÉ.
If the reader is new to Irish railways, the book does record most developments of the last 20 years - including IÉ's unseemly scramble to abandon rail-freight, which is now virtually dead in Ireland. But I personally feel the work is spoiled by poor photography, making this a wasted opportunity not worth the cover price of £14.99.
The cover photograph shown on Amazon is not that used in the actual book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Interesting Pictorial View of Irish Railways, 13 Dec 2007
By John Balmforth (West Midlands, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found the book interesting with photographs from many parts of the IE system. Having only travelled to Ireland once the book provides me with the photographic record that I would have taken had I had time. For me it is an excellent record of the last 20 years and whilst some of the photographs are a little grainy it does the job and is good value for money at the cover price £14.99.
