Product Description

Product Description
The main sections in this book follow the routes of the principal broad gauge companies, which formed the GSR, and another part of the books is devoted to the extensive narrow gauge network, which the company inherited. Innovations introduced by the company such as Drewry petrol railcars, Sentinel and Clayton steam railmotors and the Drumm battery trains, are examined. Other sections deal with the locomotives and carriages built by the company and its bus and road transport interests. The story is set against the background of the depressed economic conditions of the GSR era, which led to retrenchment and line closures.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great Southern Railways, 21 Feb 2008
By David K. Beck "Dave" (Devon UK) - See all my reviews

I was somewhat disappointed with this book which I found to be a series of pictures of locomotives rather than a pictorial of the railways as the title implies. I have been studying the lost lines around West Cork and can state the picture on page 37 top is not of Courtmacsherry. It is in fact Timoleague. How many more are suspect one wonders? There was very little devoted to these lines around west Cork. What a pity there were no colour photos to liven up an otherwise dull narrative. An index would be a useful addition, together with a bibliography.

4.0 out of 5 stars In The Days of the GSR, 8 Dec 2007
By J. M. Allen (Scotland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
The cover photograph is NOT that shown on the Amazon site. It is actually a 4.4.0 class D17, built by the GS&WR in 1883. This is a strange choice, particularly as the GSR built the three finest steam locomotives ever to run in Ireland - the 4.6.0 class B1a numbered 800-802 which entered service in 1939-40. A shot of these three magnificent locomotives lined up at Cork shed on 16 September 1949, which appears on page 83, would have been much more appropriate.
The author clearly has a love of Ireland, Irish railways and the Irish language. Nothing whatsoever wrong with that. Unfortunately, he falls into two traps - first, using Éire when he means the Irish Free State or Republic of Ireland. And second, the use of Irish for place names - although always prefaced by the more common English name. Yes, the Irish Constitution of 1937 did indeed use the name Éire - but in the context of claiming dominion over the whole island, including the six north-eastern counties still part of the UK. It is an emotive term, particularly when used in relation to World War 2, in which Northern Ireland played a full part, providing men, ships and aeroplanes for the Allied cause. As for use of the Irish language, this is fine for an Acknowledgement (with English translation), but it is unpronounceable to non-Irish speakers and simply grates in the photo captions.
And that is really all the critical comment I can level at this work. Essentially, it is an excellent pictorial record of the heyday of steam in the Irish Free State/Republic of Ireland. Many locomotives and most of the rolling stock inherited by the GSR in 1924 came from the last years of the 19th century. The independent Irish State had no money for renewals and the GRS struggled on as best it could until amalgamated into the road and rail transport undertaking CIÉ in 1945. But these must have been magnificent years for the railway enthusiast with a camera, as the GSR became in effect a working museum of railways from the Victorian era. It is all well covered in this book and the author must be congratulated for his efforts in finding mostly unpublished work from the GSR era. The great majority of photographs are well reproduced and come with an informative caption. And just about everything is covered - including the narrow gauge systems and the few innovations which the GSR was able to implement.
Thoroughly recommended for anybody with an interest in Irish steam.
