4.0 out of 5 stars On the whole, a nice book, 3 April 2003
By dasboot (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
This little book has a lot of first-class information to offer, jam-packed in its meagre 96 pages, and the photos make it particularly good value for money,as 12.99 isn't exactly cheap for its size. One would wish that the author, whose experience as a museum curator seems to have helped in compiling and sorting out the information, had more insights to offer on a particularly well-known member of the Flotilla, KptLt Heinrich lehmann-Willenbrock, who was the figure which inspired the Old Man in Das Boot (U 96 is mentioned exactly five times, two of them in notes and one in the bibliography). Perhaps the author thought that it was time for the other chaps in the Flotilla to have their innings. Still, 'tis a pity...

4.0 out of 5 stars A very nice book, 18 Mar 2003
By dasboot (Athens, Greece) - See all my reviews
Being a curator has helped Mr Konstam write a balanced factual account of the history of one of the most well-known U-boat flotillas, with interesting insights packed in the lightweight 90-odd-page book. The photos are well worth the rather hefty price for such a slim volume, too. On the whole, it would need a real U-boat expert to pick even tiny holes in the solid research carried out by Mr Konstam. However, if you intend to buy the little book in hopes of finding out juicy details about the most famous of the 117 boats of this flotilla (after U 47), namely U-96, which put the history of the U-boat war firmly on the map of international interest when "Das Boot" was published and later filmed and kept it for almost thirty years running, you will be sorely disappointed: narry a word, except for some factual details, five mentions of the boat (one in the bibliography) and none of its commander, Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock, except in a table of U-boat reinforcements. Perhaps the author thought that his book would make a good companion volume to L-G. Buchheim's monumental pictorial account "The U-Boat War", and that the time had come for the other chaps in the 7th Flotilla to have their innings.
