5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic piece of history, 21 Oct 2009
Shows the mindboggling network of british railways as they were back in 1947, just before nationalisiation. The network is colour-coded to show which of the 'big four' were operating on which line: LM&SR (red), L&NER (blue), Southern (green) and Great Western (yellow). The map is fantastic fun to study if you have an interest in the history of railways in britain. Shows the network before the Beeching cuts; and as such it's a fascinating read.

One small annoyance is that the atlas is all to the same scale; and stations are listed next to the track wherever they will fit. This means that the maps get very busy and tricky to read near the big cities. However, for a map produced before the computer age, when traffic on the rail network would have been mainly steam-hauled, one can hardly complain. It's a brilliant reprint of the contemporaneous map!

Recommended for reading in a Mk 1. carriage on a jaunt up and down a preserved railway of your choice; in good company, with scintillating conversation, and perhaps, but not necessarily, over a cup of tea.
