5.0 out of 5 stars Romance, adventure and history, 10 Aug 2005
By A Customer
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a soldier in Wellington's army if you were a woman? Well, Jennifer Lindsay's heroine, Jem (short for Jemima) finds out.
Running away from serious problems at home, she enlists in the army and becomes an exemplary soldier. This isn't as far fetched as it might sound, because there are a number of documented instances of women serving in the army, disguised as men.
The only problem is, she comes across her brother's friend, Tony, and she has to keep the secret from him whilst fighting her feelings for him. Their growing attraction is at the heart of the book, and it carries them from the battlefields of Europe to the ballrooms of England when they go home again.
The background is fresh and original, and the characters are appealing. This is a book for anyone who likes their Regencies laced with adventure, and who likes a solid historical background to their books.

3.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable romp, 15 Aug 2005

As a member of a bookgroup I came into contact with The Lady Soldier. For someone who never reads 'romance' novels or their kind, and horribly put off by the cover, I actually enjoyed this book. Initially though, the syntax of some of the sentence structure was a little odd, (I wonder if that was deliberate to give an air of the 'old'?) and I found that off putting, but I soon got swept up in the plot and enjoyed it as a romantic romp. I did find some phrases and events a little too stereotypical of romance novels, which is the reason I don't normally read them, but this will probably delight romance fans. Le Loup (?) was a satisfying baddie though and I would have liked to have seen his character and actions expanded on. Easy, engaging read though.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Read, 10 Jun 2005

I found myself invited at a book signing for this book and despite saying I wasn't going to buy a copy because I already have far too many books and anyway Romantic Historical Fiction just isn't my thing at all I ended up buying a copy. Probably because the author was attractive or something equally shallow!

Anyway I left my paper behind at the office and so started to read the book on the tube and I just couldn't put it down. Bleary eyed at 3 in the morning I finished it!

I found it totally captivating, really interesting characters and a gripping story line. I very much look forward to reading further stories of the brave Jem Riseley and the dashing Captain Dorrell!

Anyway do read it, it's a great book and a strong debut from a pair of authors that I expect we will be seeing and reading much more of in the years to come.
