Product Description

Synopsis
The morning of February 4, 1959, brought bad news for Sam McCain, rock and roll fan, for his musical idol, Buddy Holly, had perished in a plane crash. But the day also brought bad news that hit closer to home in Sam's small Iowa town: a local couple was dead, too - in an apparent murder-suicide with some disturbing loose ends. For Sam McCain, P.I. and lawyer, that means an investigation. And McCain is about to find that behind the white picket fences of Black River Falls, there's a flip side to the American dream...

5.0 out of 5 stars REAL PEOPLE IN A REAL PLACE, AND A GOOD READ., 19 Jul 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day the Music Died (Hardcover)
The author of this new book has given his readers a REAL PERSON to follow around in a REAL PLACE. One almost forgets that this is a mystery novel as Sam McCain's life, loves, family, hopes, dreams, and nightmares truly come alive as if he's somebody you know. There are a lot of stories in Black River Falls, Iowa, and each one of them holds your interest. The dustjacket says it's the beginning of a new series. I hope so.

1.0 out of 5 stars Couldn't get the facts right, 25 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day the Music Died (Hardcover)
Initially, I was really excited and ready to read this "historically accurate" mystery, because I have always loved Buddy Holly's music and the period it came from. All the pre-publication reviews talked about how wonderfully Gorman evoked the period and had researched his subject.

Well, it's difficult to buy into the research the author did, considering he got the date that Buddy Holly died, ie. "the day the music died" WRONG!!! Big time oops.

Tried to get into the book but found it pretty lame for a mystery and worse as historical fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Blend, 10 May 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Day the Music Died (Hardcover)
Unlike any other writer, Gorman successfully weaves darkness and humor, riveting suspense and gentle poignancy, literary and genre, in this excellent novel. He's one of our treasures, and each new release brings new revelations and expansion of this great talent. The Day the Music Died is an unforgettable winner of a book! (NOTE: As far as the reader above who commented about the character's reluctance to shake hands with the coroner, he/she (1) wasn't reading very carefully and/or (2) has an personal issue to deal with)
