Book Description
Mary, the beautiful, younger sister of infamous English king, Henry VIII, was forced by her brother into marriage with the aged and sickly Louis XII of France. To encourage her agreement to the match, Henry promised that her next husband could be a man of her own choice. She resolved to keep him to his promise. She was deeply in love with the low-born Charles Brandon, her brothers boon companion, and was determined to wed Brandon should King Louis die.
At the French court, Mary is pursued relentlessly by the womanising Francis, her aged husbands son-in-law. His passion is given greater scope by Louis dismissal of most of Marys English attendants. The swarthy Franciss passion for the beautiful, blonde Mary increased, and, with the death of her aged spouse and Franciss elevation to the French throne, her situation becomes desperate.
Unprotected, Mary is a captive prey to Francis lust for her.
Hoping, if she appeals to his gallantry, Francis will quell his ardour, Mary reveals her love of Charles Brandon. This appeal to his better nature results in his promise to help the would-be lovers.
Since Louis death, Mary had become increasingly anxious about the rumours she heard concerning her brothers plans for her future. Because,in spite of his solemn promise that she would be allowed to choose her next husband herself, Mary suspected that Henry intended to push her in to another loveless marriage to suit himself and the State.
Visitors from the English court increased her fears and when Charles Brandon came to the French court, Marys anxiety had made her wretched. Hysterical, she demanded that he marry her there and then. Bemused by Marys tears and accusations, Brandon gave in and, with the cynical assistance of Franciss mother who had feared that if Francis attempted seduction of Mary were to succeed, any resultant child could usurp her sons succession to the throne.
The marriage ceremony between Mary and Charles Brandon is performed in secret and consummated. Then, as it slowly dawns on them what they have done, the newly-wed pair fearfully awaited Henrys reaction
