He needs Paco's skill as a detective, the major explains, because a very important case has to be solved - the man who killed the general's dog must be brought to justice. At first, Paco refuses, even though Gomez threatens to kill him, but the major knows exactly what he needs to do to ensure that the detective has no choice but to co-operate.
Even from the start of the investigation, Paco is aware of the fact that as soon as he solves the case he will be executed, but despite that he becomes deeply intrigued by it. The more he learns, the more he realises that there is more to the case than the simple death of an animal, but even he has no idea that before the investigation is over, there will be two more brutal murders.
