Product Description

Product Description

"The City of York Companion" provides a unique insight into one of the most famous and historic cities in England. The authors have combined impressive calligraphy for the complete text and evocative drawings to produce an outstanding record of a city which the Romans established in AD 71 and occupied for almost 300 years. Most cities are best explored on foot. In York, thankfully, there is no other way, and with its winding streets, intriguing 'snickelways', riverside walks and the icing on the cake of the city walls, it is a pedestrian's paradise. The city has been fortunate in that it has not suffered the periodic destructions by war, natural disasters or redevelopment that has been the lot, for example, of the City of London. Its architectural history has been one of a gentle ebb and flow with each succeeding period leaving its mark but not at the expense of those that have gone before. York has in fact experienced relatively little in the way of large scale modern development and consequently presents a picture of delightful unity, the various periods of building existing in perfect visual harmony. "The City of York Companion", with its inspiring and highly original presentation, takes the visitor through every part of the fascinating area within the city walls. It will prove to be an indispensable guide for all those interested in this great city.

About the Author

Martin Mason and Malcolm Sanders first met at infant school in 1947. Their common interest in architecture and history led to the publication, in 1994, of their first book, The City Companion, a combination of topographical, illustrative and descriptive studies of the older parts of the City of London that still remain. Martin Mason is an architect and studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture. Malcolm Sanders, who drew the illustrations, based on photographs by Martin Mason, is also the calligrapher for the book. He is an interior designer and studied at the Central School of Art and Design. Both have grown-up families.
