Product Description

Product Description

In the years since this standard work was last revised, many changes have taken place in the publishing world, not least the abandonment of the Net Book Agreement and the developments in electronic publishing. For this new edition of his invaluable guide, Michael Legat has rewritten the text extensively, not only to bring the book up to date, but also to present a clearer and more comprehensive coverage of the many aspects of its subject. Few pages of the original edition have been left unchanged, and the book has therefore been completely reset.

About the Author

Michael Legat was born in London and educated at Whitgift School, Croydon. He joined the Publicity and Production Department of The Bodley Head in 1941, and apart from three years' wartime service in the Navy, stayed there for nine years. In 1952 he was appointed Editorial Director of Corgi Books, following which he held the same position with Cassell & Company. Since 1978 he has been a full-time author, publisher's consultant and lecturer. He has served on the Management Committee of the Society of Authors, on the Literature Advisory Panel of South East Arts, and as a Director of the Authors' Licensing and Collecting Society and of the Copyright Licensing Agency. He is married and lives in Horsted Keynes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Red HOT - MUST Have!!, 12 Nov 2000
By Mr. B. H. Joyce (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
If you are considering the jump from hobby writer to professional (or just plain curious), this book is a necessity. Not so much a guide book as a bible. Ever wondered why typescripts take so long at the publishers? What is Libel, Sedition, Obscenity and Plagiarism? How does copyright work and how should publishing contracts be dealt with? The answers to these and other Frequently Asked Questions are dealt with in a straightforward jargon free manner. Of particular interest is the section on the actual publishing process. A fascinating read from submission of typescript to production of the finished product. A first hand insight into the industry, as told by a very experienced and successful writer and publisher. Every so often a book comes along that is a 'must have'. 'An Author's Guide To Publishing', is one of them. Not just for authors' but anyone who likes an interesting, entertaining read. Buy two copies. One the bookshelf and one for the bedside table.
