Product Description

Product Description
This is the first paperback edition of the definitive guide to Dartmoor's most important and hitherto uncharted historic tracks. The moor's traditional travel routes have been shrouded in mystery and many of them were in danger of being lost altogether. Through meticulous research and intensive field work over decades to clarify doubtful portions of the routes, Eric Hemery, acknowledged as Dartmoor's leading writer, established the historical background to the 28 tracks described here. His painstaking study led him to take issue with the Ordinance Survey over such fictions as 'Abbot's Way' and 'Drizzlecombe' and he presents convincing arguments to support his findings. An important feature of track-routing throughout the book is the use of recorded evidence from experienced moormen, present and past, for route details. In every case such evidence was personally communicated to the author and may be regarded as irrefutable. Sixteen trans-moorland tracks occupy part 1 of the book and twelve inter-moorland tracks, part 2, many of which had not been previously researched before the first publication of this book. Detailed maps and illustrations allow readers to follow in the steps of monks, merchants, tin miners and others who over the centuries established safe ways across the treacherous moor.

About the Author
Born in the Blackmoor Vale of Dorset on 1914, Eric Hemery trained as a musician. In intervals between his musical commitments, he studied, explored and guided on Dartmoor. On retirement as a teacher, he switched professionals and became Dartmoor's foremost writer and lecturer. He is the author of the definitive High Dartmoor: Land and People ('the standard work', Daily Telegraph) and until his death in early 1986 was the acknowledged world authority on Dartmoor. He is buried in the churchyard of Meavy, the church where he and his family regularly worshipped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great on history but routes do not return to start points, 13 Mar 2002
By A Customer
This book is great on history and detail (at times even supplying the names of those from whom permission should be sought for non-rights of way) but the drawback is that the routes are one-way, i.e. they can be walked in either direction but do not return to starting point (although walkers could perhaps double back).

Also the routes are mostly over 15 miles so may need an overnight stay en route (which might prove an attraction for some).

So definitely a guidebook for history and scenery hungry trekkers rather than for motorists looking for family walks.

Having said that, the book is quite readable by itself - so good for armchair ramblers (or those inflicted with blisters from the previous day!)

5.0 out of 5 stars Essential Reference, 15 Jan 2006

(REAL NAME)
This together with the definitive Dartmoor book (Crossings Guide to Dartmoor) and of course the OS Map have provided me with about as much information as I will ever need to plan walks & backpacking expiditions on Dartmoor.

I cannot rated this too highly
