Product Description

Product Description

Here is the definitive guide to writing a musical. The secrets of creating a successful musical are revealed by an experienced professional actively involved in West End theatre. Despite the large number of enthusiasts who have either completed or are engaged in writing a musical, it is surprising how little most people know about constructing one. Richard Andrews has produced an easy-to-read guide, written in an informal style, which covers the entire process from the initial idea to the first night - all backed up with personal experience. Not only is every topic covered but also a wealth of reference information is included in a resources section. In fact, the book contains all the vital ingredients to make your own musical - just add imagination. No book can teach you to be creative, or turn you into a great writer, but this one encourages you to think in more productive ways, and helps you to make the most of your writing ability. No potential writer of a musical should put finger to keyboard without it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fantastic guide, 26 Aug 2003
By Mr. A. Ralls (London, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Don't be put off by the stupid cover, this book is a wealth of information. Written by someone who works in the business rather than a university grad, it doesn't tell you how to write a musical; if you don't know how to do that, then you shouldn't be reading this book. It lets you know where you will slip up, how to improve your work, how to avoid doing what everyone else always does at the outset. It covers every field from music and lyrics to marketing and production. If you think that you don't need to know about all these fields, believe me, you do. Along with a healthy slating of various successful but poor musicals, this book is a fantastic guide which you can read in a day. You will learn so much.

3.0 out of 5 stars A useful and informative resource into which one can dip., 13 April 2001
I recently purchased this book direct from the publishers (ashamedly, not from Amazon!) and consequently waited a very long time for the publishers to go to print. Generally, it was worth the wait, but as one might expect, the more experienced the reader, the less useful it becomes.

One big disappointment was to discover references to out-of-date resources, for example, Sibelius 7, which was superceded by the PC version in 97/98. Come on! If it's worth the (long) wait for a copy, one would expect it to be very contemporary.

In conclusion, this is a necessary addition to the bookshelf of the novice or amateur, but beware some out-of-date info that may not be apparent to the uninitiated!

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple, basic, good, 5 April 2009
By Yasmin (Cornwall) - See all my reviews
A lot of this book is common sense, but if you are writing a musical for the first time, it does contain some basic information that is really useful. Also, has very interesting sections on structuring your work with examples. It helped us keep on the straight and narrow. And it is not intimidating.
