It isn't enough to know that you must use correct grammar, or substitute sparkling words for dull ones C you have to know how to deal physically with the manuscript. "Copyediting" tells how this is done, from the publisher's point of view, giving all the rules in a succinct, memorable style. The book can be used as a learning tool, a supplement to a style manual, or as a reference for experienced copyeditors. In addition, authors can use it to edit their material, university students can use it to polish their theses, and all other with the urge to write can use it to improve their work.

About the Author
Karen Judd, editing manager at McGraw Hill, Inc., has nurtured from typescript to print, manuscripts as diverse and challenging as mystery novels, articles onm multiple regression analysis, and calculus textbooks. Formerly production manager at Random House and managing editor at Harper & Row's 1980 Cass Canfield Sabbatical to complete Copyediting: A Practical Guide, her first book. In addition, she has taught copyediting at the University of California and in publishing.

Judd has attempted to include everything from grammar and punctuation to how the industry works, and for a beginner it will make a good read. Anyone with more (or any) experience looking for a reference guide would be better off using Judith Butcher's Copyediting. Avoid the section on Mathematical and Scientific works if you ever want to work in STM publishing!
