Having read this book several times in the past from its original publishing, I am drawn back to the work. It tells the story of a young Dutch Tug Boat man who's early years were spent in the Dutch Salvage fleets of the pre-war years. This is a preamble to the main thrust of the tale, taking the reader through the early years of the war as an exile from his country doing his "bit" for Britain in command of a Large Dutch Tug around the British coastline. The tale culminates in an Artic run to the high latitude Russian ports. This book is not formula "action thiller" as it is as much about people as anything else, Mr Hartog's genius keeps you turning the pages and leaves you wishing there was more of the same when you come to the end.
