5.0 out of 5 stars A Nail Biting Thriller, 15 Feb 2006
By Scottish Dave (Edinburgh, Scotland) - See all my reviews

This review is from: Long Lost (Paperback)
I had read a couple of David Morrell's novels recently - "Assumed Identity" and "Extreme Denial". Both were American spy thrillers and I thoroughly enjoyed them.

"Long Lost" is a thriller from a different angle with no spies in sight. Brad Denning's younger brother Petey is kidnapped when they were children. Years later Brad is married with a wife and son and Petey turns up at his doorstep. Is it really Petey or someone pretending to be him? Petey disappears shattering Brad's life in the process and Brad goes on his trail.

I found this an excellent thriller and over a couple of days. Once the pace picks up I couldn't put it down. Characters are good, plot is equally strong and I found myself really gripped by the story.

Overall 9/10 and I'm on the trail of further David Morrell books as a result.

3.0 out of 5 stars Dazzling Read By The Numbers Thriller, 28 Mar 2007

This review is from: Long Lost (Paperback)
David Morrell has written some amazing books namely FIRST BLOOD The Fifth Proffession, The League Of Night And Fog both mind blowningly brilliant and complex and different. Unfortunately with this one the story is far from original, the twists can be seen a mile away and a pretty basic book. However it is a fast paced book and not a bad read.

Story in short is Brad upsets his brother Petey a number of years before the book starts and Petey comes back and visits the family. What has Petey been upto and is he really Petey or some other crazy person.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good read at a sitting stuff., 19 July 2006

This review is from: Long Lost (Paperback)
Well plotted if a little sketchily characterised it fairly rattles along with not much time for introspection or contemplation and focussing on the central character to the exclusion of everyone else. That said, it does add a really close claustrophobic atmosphere.

The plot hangs together very well and Morrell has done his research. About halfway through there was a glaring 'oh come on, you can't be serious' moment, but to be fair to Morrell, he does a couple of swift sidesteps and he's back on track moving like an express train.

I'll be reading more Morrell.
