Product Description

Synopsis

A Catholic priest turned detective is asked to hear a criminal''s confession as he faces the death penalt y. He is convicted of 12 murders but was he responsible for them all, and does his confession hold a different meaning? '

From the Back Cover

Sergeant Malcolm Ainslie of the Miami police homicide department is about to take a well-earned family holiday when he is called away on an urgent mission. A criminal on Death Row with only a few hours to live before being sent to the electric chair has requested that Ainslie hear his confession. Will Elroy 'Animal' Doyle finally confess to the series of grisly double murders for which Ainslie hunted him down? Or, as Ainslie is a former Catholic priest, does the convicted man's desire to 'confess' have a totally different meaning?

Detective is vintage Arthur Hailey. Chillingly authentic, it is a page-turning thriller of drama and suspense by one of the world's bestselling novelists. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly readable, bar the niggles, 14 April 2005
Miami detective and former priest Malcolm Ainslie is summoned to Death Row by a condemned serial killer he helped to convict. From here unravels a complex tale of violent murder, revenge and deception.

As always Hailey has researched his subject extensively. However, at times his meticulousness can become a little tiresome, with some of the descriptions reading like an estate agent's particulars and some of the scenes played out blow by blow when a more distilled slice of action would be more dramatic.

Likewise, there is a rule of writing 'Show don't tell' which Hailey continually oversteps. He clearly knows what he is doing, but there's a sense of his wanting to impart all the knowledge he has so painstakingly gathered. He does, however, make what appears to be a rare slip in suggesting that gunshot residue can be washed off a person's hands. My own research shows that there are routinely used chemical tests that detect GSR presence.

Also, the nature of the serial killings that are the backbone of the plot borders on the contrived, dreamt up for the purposes of serving the latter half of the book.

Criticism aside, this is an enjoyable read. Hailey takes the reader inside the workings of the Miami homicide department and introduces some powerful characters whose lives interact with devastating consequences.

4.0 out of 5 stars great!, 9 Sep 2000

A real page turner. The detail in this book is wonderful and the complicated and entwined 'minds eye picture ' these pages paint on the back of your eyelids is truly magnificent. How ever not a book for the faint hearted! The horror aspect in this book is very 'real' and the kind of thing that makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up! Parts of the book are not to be read late at night. Very true to life and shocking in more ways than one, like many books it depends on how you read it...............

I highly enjoyed reading Arthur Hailey's latest book. I have read all his books and this one definitely comes on top with flying colours. A superb book.

Mr. Hailey, hats off.

1.0 out of 5 stars Offensive and very disappointing
I found this book to be one of the most disappointing of Hailey's books yet. In terms of plot and action, it was on par of many of his previous successes. Read more
