5.0 out of 5 stars My all time favorite book...one I have read many times..., 11 Jan 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The King's General (Paperback)
This is du Maurier at her finest...probably her best book ever. This beautifully written gothic romance has everything a typical du Maurier fan wants...historical romance, daring swordfights, secret rooms, scoundrels (both male and female), and her beloved Cornwall and Menabilly. What gives this story its vitality is du Maurier's personal involvement in it; her obsession with Menabilly is apparent in the story. The plot, however, is very convoluted and complex, and I had to re-read the beginning at first to understand the story. Honor Harris is a new du Maurier heroine. She is the woman in the wings, watching adoringly her Prince Charming perform on center stage. She is peculiarly asexual, preferring to nurture the General's weakling son instead of the General's macho sexuality. Honor's competitor is Gartred...who is a beautiful, aggressive, and sexual creature while Honor is plain, passive, and chaste. This isn't really a romance...it's an anti-romance...but it's a great fantasy set during England's Civil War and du Maurier's ability to write descriptively and in the abstract is brilliant.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Kings General, 23 Oct 2008
This review is from: The King's General (Hardcover)
An enthralling story, would recommend it to anyone who likes superb flowing language that creates fantastically vivid imageries of south west england deep in civil war for the reader.
