Alex McKnight is a former cop turned private detective. He retired from the force after he and his partner were shot by a man called Maximilian Rose. His partner died and Alex moved to Paradise, a small town by the shores of Lake Superior in Michigan.

Now, several years later, a series of killings are taking place and the killer appears to be none other than Maximilian Rose - although he is supposedly locked up in prison. What's more, Rose appears to be targeting McKnight as another victim.

This is a convoluted but highly enjoyable suspense novel that is very hard to put down. The suspense is almost unbearable at times. The book reads very much like a movie and just like a movie it hangs on at the end when you think that everything is wrapped up to give you one more twist in the tale. This is the first of seven novels featuring Alex McKnight and while it's not imperative to start with #1, it does introduce some characters who reappear in subsequent novels. If you enjoy the likes of Harlan Coben and Christopher Reich, I strongly recommend A Cold Day in Paradise.

There are obvious similarities here with other books and authors of this genre, and the one I'm thinking of is early Patricia Cornwell. Not so much the substance, but the style and the flow of the prose, as well as the whole feel of the book. It reads very easily, and although crime thrillers are ten a penny, this one stands out because of this quality of writing and the flow of the writing. But it's a good story, too; with too many of these books the end is obvious a mile off. This book isn't like that - it keeps the reader on his/her toes and eagerly anticipating the next page. I'll be looking out for the author's second novel - so often a book like this comes along and cannot be sustained past that first novel (I feel the same waiting for the follow-up to 'God Is A Bullet' - possibly the best crime/thriller novel of last year). Look at how quickly Patricia Cornwell went off the boil after the first 2 or 3 novels. Read this book if you feel at all attracted to it. I'm sure you won't regret it.

In this first novel by Steve Hamilton, Alex McKnight is an ex-cop from the mean streets of Detroit. With a bullet imbedded next to his heart, he retreats to the cold of Paradise, Michigan. Now a private investigator for a lawyer, Alex is content until he stumbles across a murder scene, and the sight of blood stirs horrible memories of his partner’s death in Detroit. Eerie messages addressed to him sound remarkably like the disturbed psycho who shot him and his partner fourteen years ago. But he’s in jail! How can he be in two places at once? Hamilton writes a superb thriller that catches you right from the start. Alex is an intriguing character—not mancho and yet not a wimp either. His fear of the past was so gripping that it really set the tone for this eerie murder mystery. Can’t wait to read the next one in the series!
