5.0 out of 5 stars A Forgotten Classic, 3 Jun 2002
This review is from: Fool's Run (Hardcover)
In a way I suppose one might call this the forgotten classic of McKillip's work. The vast majority of her work has been in the fantasy genre, which is by no means a denigration of such, she has written some of the most beautiful and striking fantasies of the past 30 years. Here she moves into the quite different territory of Science Fiction, and in many ways the different rigours attached to that genre have brought out some of her best writing. If I have ever had a single criticism of McKillip's mature work, it was that she did not give the plots enough strength and instead allowed her characters and landscapes (wonderfully portrayed though they are) to drift along without a truest sense of urgency. In Fool's Run, there is no possibility of this happening. The dynamic necessities of the plot and the intersection of character and imagery are utterly compelling from the first page. The shear evocative beauty of her prose, a thing which has been her hallmark as a writer from her very earliest works, serves the story completely rather than as occasionally seems the case being the point of the book in total.
I have no wish to describe the plot of the novel, suffice it to say that it is a fascinating premise, brilliant constructed and elegantly concluded. What I will mention is that the her characters, so well drawn in all her other novels, are here as vivid and as accessible as they ever have been. She is one of the most gifted writers of her generation, in any genre, and this is one of her best and brightest works. If you can get your hands on a copy do so, or send letters to her publishers to get it reissued, it is certainly worth the effort.
