4.0 out of 5 stars Blending mythologies, 26 Sep 2001
By A Customer
Dennis Schmidt continues his smorgasbord of mythologies as the young Voden makes his way in the world becoming a wanderer. The main thrust of the book is nested in Norse mythology with Voden (read Odin) fighting against their perpetual enemies of Jotunheim (giants) and maintaining an uneasy relationship with Vanaheim - an alliance finally cemented by marriage to Freyja. There are contacts with Middle Eastern mythologies with the Egyptian and Babylonian/Sumerian type characters making an appearance. In the style of writing there are two distinct styles. The first concerns itself with interaction between characters which can speed along quite quickly, especially during action sequences. The second is almost a "dreamquest" where the pace is slowed as the dreamer deals with the conflicts within their own souls. The book builds up the atmosphere for a cataclysmic finale (Ragnarok) which is played out in full in the third book. The detail regarding the major players in the various interpretations of the spirit is quite astounding, obviously considerable research has been done. And it appears to me that the physical manifestation of such spiritual beings is solely dependent on the culture/civilisation that the humans come from. The reality of the underlying form is no different though, but simply cannot be seen by the human eye. There are so many major characters I simply could not do justice as to how much development goes into them in what appears to be a normal sized book. I found the whole thing fascinating.
