5.0 out of 5 stars Folklore and the Well-cult in Wales, 7 Oct 2002
By A Customer
The history of the well-cult in Wales from antiquity to modern times, is the object of this book, which addresses both the general reader and a more scientific audience . Particularly relevant to the notion of wells as sacred vessels are chapters II and III, where Jones examines wells as parts of ritual activity in ancient pre-Christian and Medieval Wales respectively. The association of ancient wells with megaliths or trees and the efforts of the early church to 'christianize' the flourishing well-cult by connecting wells with saints, are interesting observations made by the author. Overall a very good overview of ancient and modern folklore associated with wells.
