Amazon.co.uk Review
This title immediately begs the question: "Just how small is small?" The author, expert horticulturist and accomplished writer Sue Fisher, loses no time in qualifying the statement in the introduction. One hundred years ago, a plot of several acres was considered small, but nowadays the tiniest gardens can be little more than the size of the tablecloths which would have graced the house accompanying such a plot.
It therefore goes without saying that in such a small garden, where space is limited, every plant matters, but with care, help, skill, informed choice and determination, these small gardens can be made to look magnificent. The book, after the introduction, is divided into five excellent sections, followed by a first- class plant directory. Each section contains lots of information for new and experienced gardeners, ranging from how to assess a site, planning your planting, secrets of successful planting, to creative planting and practical gardening points. They are further sub-divided, with an easily readable text, with bold headings making reference quick and straightforward. Throughout, the book is liberally illustrated with superb colour photographs, watercolour plans and informative designs, suitable plants in each section being highlighted in outlined boxes. Particularly commendable is the extensive plant directory, with each entry containing a concise description of the plant, its height and spread, preferred growing conditions and propagation requirements. In conclusion, let it be said, small really is beautiful. --Susan Naylor
