Review

'Don't write your birth plan before reading... Birth Rights. Here is a book that demystifies the birth process - from decoding pregnancy case notes, to understanding the impllcations of diagnostic testing, avolding a mis-managed labour and breaking the post-natal conspiracy of silence. Pat Thomas takes us behind the scenes to find out what makes health professionals tick and how to get the most out of them. Her work will help restore the continued imbalance between the birthing woman and those whose job is to support her.' Deborah Jackson, author of Do Not Disturb: The Benefits of Relaxed Parenting; 'An unbiased presentation of the facts from the woman's perspective... I would recommend every pregnant woman to buy, read and then use this book a continuing source of information throughout her reproductive years.' Marsden Wagner, MD, MSPH - World Health Organisation; 'The moment you have a positive pregnancy test,... Birth Rights should be your ante-natal "bible".' Lynne McTaggart, editor, What the Doctors Don't Tell You

Product Description

This guide enables mothers to make positive choices about pregnancy and childbirth, It encourages them to trust and act on their instincts rather than acquiesce to the many unevaluated routines and procedures used in maternity care. Clear, challenging, unsentimental and under-awed by the "miracle" of modern obstetrics, here is a book that women can use from the minute they know they are pregnant to become more than simply silent partners in one of the most important events in their lives.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for anyone expecting a baby, 23 Jan 2004
Well written, concise and precise with a good 'pros and cons' analysis of routine procedures offered in hospitals. This book enabled me to make well informed decisions about my pregnancy and my labour right down to the last minute of my birth experience! Don't leave it to your midwife to explain things to you; having a baby is the most important time of your life and it's up to you to make sure that decisions made are right for you and your baby rather than simply being done according to 'hospital protocol'. Easy to understand, it will give you confidence.

1.0 out of 5 stars Opinionated and anti-medical profession, 22 Jan 2005
i thought that this book would lay out the facts concerning a womans rights when having a baby, however I found many comments in this book to be alarming and reactionary. Although some of the information is useful the author comes across as being very anti the medical proffession. If this is your first baby this book may scare you off hospitals for life. Much of it contradicted my experiences when having my first baby. Women need to be empowered so that they can make their own decisions but they also need to work with the medical profession, this book appears to take a negative view about all aspects of medical care throught pregnancy and labour.I was dissapointed with the biased view of this book and found many of the statistics and quotes to be unsourced.
