5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional overview - buy it now!, 3 Mar 2001
This is an excellent book if you are looking for an overview of the behaviour, the wide range of causes, manifestations, services available, treatments, together with comments on self help groups, suggestions for how to break the pattern of selfharm, and helpful advice for partners, family and other carers. The book has been written by three women with an extraordinary combination of personal experience and psychology training. They have each first experienced selfharm and its treatment either themselves or in a child they cared for, and then also in their work as clinical psychologists, through ongoing involvement with support for women who selfharm. The result is a book which recognises that the trauma which originates selfharm is widely varied, as well as the individual's experience of it and response to it, and so the need for each person who self harms to explore and discover the causes and mechanism is constantly validated through the book. No particular treatment technique is promoted, and the pros and cons of various approaches are drawn out. I bought this book because a young person I know started to cut herself in response to "hating school". I found this behaviour very difficult to understand, as, knowing her and her circumstances well, I am certain that she is not subject to any "serious" abuse either at home or school. The book has really helped me to begin to understand the pattern of her behaviour, and to guess at some of the ways she must be feeling about the experience of school.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely amazing, 20 Jan 2001
By A Customer
This book is a must read for anyone who either harms themselves, or the family and friends of someone who does. It does not follow the typical response of disgust and preaching, instead it focuses on offering alternative options. As well as providing insight into self-harm and why people do it, the book also includes the reassuring reminder that you are not an outcast or alone in your behavior.

4.0 out of 5 stars Illuminating and informative, 18 Feb 2003
This book is a good book for anyone who self-harms or who knows someone who does. It explores the complex and often misunderstood reasons behind self-harming. It also offers some advice about how to begin to control self-harming.
The book will give support to anyone who feels alone and bewildered by this subject and I have found it very helpful.
